Swim spas are more expensive than hot tubs because they combine the features of a spa and a swimming pool. Typical models cost between £25,000 and £50,000. They also have higher running costs because there is more water to heat and circulate, and they require stronger pumps and more chemicals. Average monthly running costs are around £210, including electricity, chemicals and water.
Unlike an inflatable hot tub, a swim spa is heavy and requires a reinforced concrete base or deck and a hard‑wired electrical connection. Delivery and installation often need specialist equipment, so site preparation can add significantly to the overall price.
Swim spas have to fit both a swim lane and seating in a single shell. That means the seating area is usually smaller and less luxurious than a dedicated hot tub. Because of their size they also require more space in your garden than a standard spa.
While the counter‑current allows you to swim in place, the swim lane is much shorter than a lap pool. Competitive swimmers may find it difficult to practise full strokes or turns. A swim spa also has limited depth compared with a pool.
Swim spas need the same water chemistry and filter maintenance as a hot tub, plus extra attention to the larger pumps and heating system. Running large pumps creates more noise than a standard hot tub.
Despite these drawbacks, swim spas offer a unique combination of exercise, hydrotherapy and relaxation at a lower cost than building a pool. They can be used year‑round and take up much less space than an in‑ground pool. For many families the benefits outweigh the downsides.
