Both swim spas and hot tubs offer warm water and hydrotherapy, but they serve different purposes.
A hot tub is designed purely for relaxation and socialising. It is typically smaller and features multiple seats and massage jets. A swim spa combines a pool and a hot tub: it has an open area for swimming against a current and usually includes bench seating or a separate hot‑tub zone.
High‑quality hot tubs typically cost between £5,000 and £15,000 and require a flat base and electrical supply. Swim spas start around £17,000 and go up to £50,000 or more. They need a reinforced pad and sometimes additional electrics because of their larger pumps and heaters.
Hot tubs have smaller water volumes, so they heat up quickly and cost less to run. Swim spas hold more water and require more power to run the current and maintain temperature. A heat pump can help offset these costs.
If your main goal is exercise and you have space, a swim spa provides year‑round swimming and a place to unwind. If you mainly want hydrotherapy and socialising at a lower cost, a hot tub may be a better fit.
